Commercial Awareness

I am a maker. I love creating weird and wonderful characters and interesting models that just put a smile on people's faces. In college I explored a lot of different skills, illustration, photography, digital design, and I really found my passion when I started creating 3d models with my hands. I believe the first model I made in the first year of college was a mountain landscape, practising clay, plaster and painting skills, I really enjoyed having something physical in my hands that I could create almost anything with.

Since starting at Arts University Bournemouth, I have created countless ideas, designs and models using all sorts of materials, techniques and machines. Not to sound corny but I do believe that being a maker of things is my calling in life and I am merely too excited and nervous to see where this will take me in life.

Speaking in model making terms I am what they call a "soft edge" person, I spend my time sculpting, using clay and other soft mediums to create my models, It is what I am comfortable and confident with. My goal is to be able to have my work be seen in film, this may take a little while to achieve as I know from research it is fairly difficult to get into the film industry due to its exclusivity, but this is my long term goal of mine and I plan on achieving it.

As there are not that many advertised jobs within this industry I have been making a list of potential companies in the UK that I would really want to work for, the top ones being Crawley Creatures and Couiler Creatures. In the future if I was confident enough to move all the way to New Zealand then Weta Workshop would be the ideal company to work alongside as they specialise in character and creature design.

Due to current circumstances regarding covid-19 I realise that the film industry has been largely impacted, there is still a high demand for films which means hope is not lost for finding a job out of graduation. I have adapted to the working from home lifestyle quite well and am confident that when the time comes whether the projects will be done at home or in a studio that I will be able to adjust to the industry's new ways of working.
