Sculpting the Human Form

Even though I will be re inventing Ponyo as an untooned character meaning that her proportions will stay the same just turned realistic, I will still need to know the basics of sculpting the human form so to make my sculpture of Ponyo as convincing as a real human being.

To begin with, a human face is not completely symmetrical, I was always taught that when doing makeup our eyebrows are like sister not twins, meaning that they look the same but if they were to look identical it could seem somewhat mechanical and unnatural. A face will usually have these basic proportions shown below with the eyes in the centre of the head, with these lines yo are able to mark your sculpt where everything should go. As I am keeping the same proportions of the animation I will have to use the lines that I will make on my design for the most part.

Skin texture

Sculpting a child is more difficult due to the fact their skin is so soft and smooth whereas sculpting an aged person you have more lines and contours to add to the face. However no childs face is completely smooth, if you look close enough you can see all the many lines and pores that make up that childs face and so knowing that they still do have lines its how deep and defined to make them that is harder to do.

This video Is helpful to know how much depth in the texture I should include into my sculpture:

This clay head sculpture is not so realistic however it does show the basic structure of the human head, focusing on the jaw line, bone structure and muscles

It is a good technique to use to mark out the complex shape and then to soften and make realistic.

This next sculpture is completely realistic including even the glasses mounted on top.

This is the amount of detail I would like to achieve on my sculpt.
