Problem Finding and Solving

Another week in presented more problems that needed to be dealt with. Beginning with working out the best poses, materials and methods in making, I found out the hard way that roto-casting may not have been the best option for the job; after casting the first two goblins with this method there were serious problems that needed addressing, on both goblins the ears were not formed properly, bubbles covering the surface and some details not properly cured. Back to the drawing board, with no time to make new moulds my only option was to start by painting layers of the casting material into each half of the silicone and then securing together ready for a few layers of roto-casting. This new method ensured a great (no bubbles) outcome.

Now having two unusable casts it was time to test the famous Smooth Cast 57D casting material on its well talked about high impact resistance. In the video below I show you the many ways that these models can be chucked around and still survive.

As you have seen, this material is definitely highly impact resistant; its semi rigid flexibility means that it would take a lot of brute force to snap off those ears. When these models are finished an in place at the escape room, the only potential damage would be them being dropped from a more reasonable height.

Learning From my mistakes earlier and painting on the casting material the results were far better with only a few bubbles here and there but nothing to worry about. I used pigments to colour the casts to make for an easier time painting however the colours came out slightly different on the front and back of the goblins, this is because I couldn't get the exact colour both times and had to do the first layers in a few batches due to the pot life of smooth cast being 3 minutes.

The final casts are shown below:
