Goldfish to Human, Choosing the Iconic Pose

gemmagoodridgegg

Throughout the whole film there are so many iconic scenes that have great potential to be the final sculpture I will make. Choosing the right one is imperative to help bring Ponyo into the real world.

A list of the most memorable scenes:

  • Floating kiss at the end of the film

  • Riding on the waves

  • Eating her first ramen

  • Standing in the road holding the bucket

  • Laying under the jellyfish

  • Sailing the toy boat

  • Turning into a human in front of her father

Due to the fact I love this film so much its a bit of a struggle to decide on a scene as I love them all. For me, the most iconic scene is the one at the end of the film where Ponyo impatiently kisses Sosuke and is flying in the air, however for this pose to work I would imagine having to make both characters which is much more work than I was planning on doing. Ponyo running on the waves, eating ramen and sailing the toy boat also have the same problem where there is too much going on in the scene, meaning too many other props to make but without them it wouldn't do the scene or atmosphere justice.

In my previous works I have always tried to create something a bit out of the ordinary as I find more enjoyment in the unusual than the usual. Out of the top scenes I've chosen, three of them are Ponyo either in the middle of transforming or when she's still in her magical fish form, these to me are the most interesting as it's not something we see in our normal day to day lives. If I chose one of these it would allow me to test and enhance my skills on different textures and techniques.

Out of my three most favourite scenes I have decided to choose the one where she's stood on the road holding the bright green bucket. The scene represents the time when she's escaped her father to be a human forever, she's in the transitioning stage between being a magical fish and full grown human child. It's the love Ponyo has for Sosuke and the human world and its benefits that's the reason why she's left the sea. This pose will allow me to combine both fish, frog and human in an untooned manner as well as incorporating a prop bucket and a base that matches the road.
